ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To establish a model of long-term free drinking mouse by feeding mice with alcohol to simulate the state of human voluntary long-term drinking, and on this basis, to further discuss the evaluation criteria of long-term free drinking mice model in sports, anxiety and cognitive behavior.@*METHODS@#Forty six-week-old SPF C57BL/6 male mouse were randomly divided into two groups: Long-term free drinking group (n=20) and normal control group (n=20). The two groups were given solid feed normally. The long-term free drinking group was free to take 10% alcohol and water every day, while the normal drinking group only took water every day. The mice were fed for 7 months, and were evaluated by a series of behavioral methods, including Rota-rod test, balance beam test, open filed test, the elevated plus maze, two-box social behavior, new object recognition, Y maze and water maze.@*RESULTS@#With the increase of drinking days, the mice showed significant alcohol addiction in the alcohol preference test. With the increase of alcohol intake, the mice in the long-term free choice drinking group had slightly shiny fur and reduced diet. Compared with the control group, the weight gain began to slow down from the third month, and the weight decreased significantly by the sixth and seventh months (P=0.006, P < 0.001). The mice showed reduced balance locomotion ability (P=0.003, P=0.001) in the rotary bar and balance beam test. In the open field and elevated cross test, the mice had obvious anxiety-like behavior (P < 0.001). The mice showed decreased social ability in the two boxes of social behavior (P < 0.016). In the experiment of new object recognition and Y maze, the exploration of new object decreased (P=0.018, P=0.040). In the water maze, cognitive functions, such as learning and spatial memory were reduced (P < 0.001).@*CONCLUSION@#The successful establishment of the long-term free drinking mouse model is more convenient for us to carry out further research on the neural mechanism of alcohol addiction, and lays an experimental foundation for exploring the neural mechanism of alcohol addiction and related new targets.

ABSTRACT

Animal welfare regards the quality of life and the environment in which animals live or are exposed. Hence the importance of studies assessing the environmental influence on the biology and behavior of fishes from the Colossoma macropomum species, considering their higher potential for fish-farming and as a test organism in scientific research. This study aimed to assess, in a controlled environment, the behavioral changes expressed by juveniles from the Colossoma macropomum species exposed to different ambient colors or social situations. The results did not show an influence from the different ambient colors or social situations on fish distribution in the water column. The color pattern showed dark tones in black- and blue-colored environments, and light tones in white-colored environments or with the presence of a mirror. The time of locomotor activity/frequency did not change in any of the treatments of exposure to environments with colors and a mirror. Moreover, the fishes remained with folded fins and a straight posture, maintaining a pattern of rhythmic operculum beating in a normal frequency range described for the species. This suggests that animal welfare did not change in any of the situations tested and that there was a pattern of adaptive response to the type of environment.

ABSTRACT

Inadequate pre-slaughter handling conditions can compromise animal welfare and productivity. This study aimed to evaluate the animal welfare (AW) indexes during pre-slaughter handling and quantify the carcass lesions of beef cattle submitted to different loading densities. A total of 270 Nellore cattle, at 30 months of age, from three farms were used in the study. Each farm presented a different loading density: higher density (500kg/m2), intermediate density (450kg/m2), and lower density (420kg/m2). Three shipments of cattle from each farm with 30 animals each were used in the AW analysis. Ten animals from each shipment were considered for quantification of carcass bruises. The AW indexes were classified according to the five-freedom criterion (physiological, environmental, sanitary, behavioral, and psychological). After slaughter, the carcasses were inspected in the routine line and evaluated for the presence of lesions. Statistically significant differences (p<0.001) were found for all variables studied as a function of AW and bruises. The best AW index and the lowest mean weight of lesions were found at the loading density of 450kg/m2. The highest carcass weight was observed at the loading density of 500kg/m2. Lesions were found in 100% of the animals at the loading densities of 500 and 420kg/m2. In conclusion, the best AW indexes and the smallest occurrence of bruises were verified at the loading density of 450kg/m2. This study confirmed the importance of adequate pre-slaughter handling to ensure cattle welfare and, consequently, greater profitability for producers and slaughterhouses.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Considered one of the best odor detectors, dogs go through a rigorous selection and training process. Based on learning theories, modern techniques are used for dog training, respecting individual characteristics, efficiency, and well-being. Since narcotics detection work is perceived as a "play" for the dog, in practice, this promotes a high use rate in the service. The performance of handlers influences the work of the dogs, and well-trained and well-run dogs must work comfortably and accurately. This paper aimed to review the aspects related to the selection, training, and performance of narcotics detection dogs.

ABSTRACT

Hemigrammus caudovittatus and Danio rerio were exposed to oral hypoglycemic drugs (HOs) metformin hydrochloride at 40µg/L and 120µg/L and to glibenclamide at 0.13µg/L and 0.39µg/L during 100 days. Toxic effects of the drugs were evaluated based on weight, animal behavior, blood glucose and mortality. H. caudovittatus exposed to lowest concentration of the drugs showed significant increase (P< 0.05) in the Air breathing event. Furthermore, increase in Rest event was observed when animals were exposed to glibenclamide at 0.39µg/L. An increase (P< 0.05) in the frequency of Rest behavior in the D. rerio exposed to metformin hydrochloride at 120µg/L was observed. Glibenclamide caused decrease (P< 0.05) in the blood glucose of H. caudovittatus. Both drugs caused lethal effect against D. rerio. Nevertheless, glibenclamide was more toxic causing 100% of mortality after 30 days of exposure. The animals that died showed congestion on the branchial arches and hemorrhage. The HOs were developed to have physiological effects in mammals. However, toxic effects were found in both species of fish studied. This raises concerns about possible toxic effects of HOs and what methods will be used for their degradation in the aquatic environment.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Environmental enrichment is an important tool within production systems to promote welfare and animal health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of enrichment objects on stress of piglets in nursery phase. 32 piglets housed in experimental farm were distributed in 4 groups (n= 8): rope, chain, pet bottle and negative control. Blood samples were collected at the beginning and end of the experiment to count circulating leukocytes and determine non-enzymatic antioxidants, nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, and saliva to evaluate cortisol. At the same time, an etogram and evaluation of mean daily gain and feed conversion were applied. The evaluated parameters on first day of the experiment did not vary between groups (P> 0.05). On the last day, neutrophil and neutrophil /lymphocyte ratios were higher in chain group piglets, as were salivary cortisol values (P< 0.05). Uric acid was higher in chain group and MDA in bottle group (P< 0.05). Environmental enrichment stimulated positive behaviors in piglets, where the rope stood out as the most attractive. On the other hand, chain had a negative effect on animal physiology, generating stress, as well as the bottle that induced lipid peroxidation and a lower weight gain in piglets.(AU)

ABSTRACT

To study the antidepressant effect of Shugan Hewei Tang on chronic stress depression model rats, and select the effective substance fractions. Several male SD rats were randomly divided into 17 groups: blank control group, model group, positive control group(fluoxetine), Shugan Hewei Tang high and low dose groups, 6 high and low dose groups of different substance fractions. After modeling for 3 weeks and administration for 1 week, the effective substance fractions were selected according to the body mass and behavioral performance of SD rats in each group; several neurotransmitters in hippocampus of rats were determined by LC-MS/MS method, including norepinephrine(NE), serotonin(5-HT), 5-indoleacetic acid(5-HIAA), r-aminobutyric acid(GABA), and glutamic acid(Glu). Behavioral results after modeling showed that as compared with the blank group, the body mass growth of the model group was significantly reduced(P<0.01); the sugar water consumption was reduced(P<0.01); the distance between the open field and the number of crossing the central area were also significantly reduced(P<0.01, P<0.01); the resting time was increased significantly(P<0.01); and the forced swimming time was significantly prolonged(P<0.01), indicating that the depression model was effective. After intragastric administration, as compared with the model group, the above detection indicators of volatile oils, total polysaccharides and terpenoid in Fluoxetine, Shugan Hewei Tang groups were all changed(P<0.05 or P<0.01). The levels of NE, 5-HT and GABA in the hippocampus of the model group were significantly lower than those in the blank group(P<0.01), and the levels of 5-HIAA and Glu were significantly increased(P<0.01). As compared with the model group, neurotransmitters of the treatment groups were changed obviously or significantly(P<0.05 or P<0.01). Shugan Hewei Tang showed obvious anti-depressant effects, and the volatile oils, total polysaccharides and terpenoids acted as the main active substances. The mechanism of anti-depression may be related to its regulation of various neurotransmitter levels in the hippocampus.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The popularity of cats as a companion animal has been growing. Additionally, there is also an increase in the number of complaints regarding behavioral problems associated with the species. Behavioral problems interfere with the animal welfare and quality of people's lives that are living with them, and are one of the main reasons for abandonment and euthanasia in some countries. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of behavioral problems among cats with the help of veterinary practitioners in the city of Porto Alegre/Brazil. This evaluation was performed through a questionnaire in veterinary clinics and hospitals of small animals, which was answered by veterinarians responsible for clinical care. The study showed that most veterinarians (92.0%) have been sought to assist with behavioral problems and that dogs were the most consulted species (72.0%). Regarding cats, scratching was the most common owners' complaints (40.0%), followed by aggressiveness (39.0%), and inappropriate elimination of urine (38.0%). Aggression (73.8%) and scratching (56.9%) were the most frequent reasons that may lead to the abandonment or euthanasia of cats. Results of this research highlighted the importance of having a better understanding about the normal behavior of cats, and the fundamental role of the veterinarian in preventing behavioral problems and abandonment of these animals.

ABSTRACT

Toxic effects of free and complexed 17β-estradiol (E2) hormone into β-cyclodextrin (CD) on the behavior and physiology of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were evaluated. The fish were observed for 30 days in two stages of development (fingerling and juvenile) by the ad libitum method to make an ethogram. After this, juveniles were divided into three groups: control and exposed to free E2 (10ng/L) and complexed into β-cyclodextrin (β-CD:E2) for 90 days. The behavior was evaluated through scan sampling method, feed intake, body mass and mortality at different intervals. The fingerlings and juveniles showed behavioral patterns with different display frequencies (P<0.05) for events: Move Away (4.7±1.3 and 3.6±0.6%) and Waving Repulsion (2.3±0.9 and 1.3±1.0%). The juveniles exposed to β-CD:E2 complex showed a significant increase (P<0.05) in the frequency of display of aggressive behaviors as Move Away, Caudal Attack, Clash Extended, Chase, Escape and decrease of mortality when compared to group exposed to free E2 and control. In conclusion, complexation of E2 into β-CD modified E2 toxicity, because it promoted an increase in the frequency of display of aggressive behaviors and it affected the mortality of animals.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The toxic effects of sodium metavanadate (MV), vanadium pentoxide (PV) and oxovanadium sulfate (SV), potential antidiabetic drug, on embryos and adults of zebrafish (Danio rerio) were evaluated. Embryos were exposed to concentrations of 10-1000µg/mL for evaluation of 96-h LC50 and their teratogenic effects. Adults were exposed to 10 and 20µg/mL of the same compounds to evaluate behavioral changes related to chemical exposure and mortality. The 96-h LC50 were 22.48, 53.62, and 74.14µg/mL for MV, SV, and PV, respectively. Mortality of 100% was observed at the concentrations of 400-1000µg/mL of the three compounds. The teratogenic effects most observed (P<0.05) were pericardial and yolk sac edemas. Adult animals exposed to the vanadium compounds had higher opercular beats and congestion in the gill arches. The exhibition of behaviors Floating and Resting in the exposed adults was significant (P<0.05), as well as the Air breathing behavior. Chemical exposure to vanadium compounds caused toxic effects in embryos and adults of zebrafish with high mortality. In conclusion, its use as a potential antidiabetic drug should be better studied due to the toxic effect.(AU)

ABSTRACT

In order to improve the management and maintenance of the quality of life of captive wild birds, this study aimed to assess the food preferences of cockatiel chicks (Nymphicus hollandicus) kept in captivity. Thirty-two cockatiel chicks, three to 12 months of age, were kept in a galvanized, wire-netted vivarium with six ceramic feeders, two for an extruded diet, two for a dry-mashed diet and two for a seed mixture. Both extruded and dry-mashed food are commercial psittacine diets. Three round ceramic pots were used to provide water. The birds were exposed to 12 hours of artificial light (40 W incandescent lamps) during the experimental period of 27 days. The birds were observed by video filming, daily, through an ad libitum observation technique. The food consumption was 3.34±0.42g/bird/day of extruded feed, 1.58±0.44g/bird/day of dry-mashed diet and 3.73±0.10g/bird/day of seed mixture. In conclusion, the cockatiel chicks preferred the seed mixture and the extruded food over the dry-mashed diet.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Polymorphisms in the dopamine p-hydroxylase gene (DBH) have been associated with temperament in cattle. In 16 animals of Colombian creole breed Blanco Orejinegro (BON), 20 Brahman (BRA) and 16 fighting bulls (GLI), polymorphisms of exon xii of the DBH gene were evaluated by sequencing. 13 haplotypes were found, 6 in BON, 9 and 2 in BRA and GLI respectively. Haplotype H2 was the most frequent in the whole population (0,615) and it was found in all breeds. Haplotypes H6 and H9 were shared between BON-BRA and BRA-GLI, respectively. The greatest value of genetic (DG: 0.915 ± 0.04) and nucleotide (DN: 0.011 ± 0.006) diversity, was found in BRA, followed by BON (DG: 0.700 ± 0.12; DN: 0.008 ± 0.004) and GLI (DG: 0.350 ± 0.14; DN: 0.0011 ± 0.001). The D-Tajima test was greater than zero, but not significant (P > 0.05) in BON and BRA, GLI presented a value of -1.92 (P < 0.05). The analysis of molecular variance showed a variation between the breeds of 23.9% and a poblacional structure (F$t) of 0.23 (P < 0.001). The highest values of the coancestry coefficient were presented between GLI and BRA (0.52) and between GLI and BON (0.22). It is concluded that the GLI race has low diversity in the DBH gene compared to BON and BRA, that there are effects of neutral selection in BON and BRA breeds, whereas, in the GLI and not in favor of temperament.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The importance of behavioral and physiological biomarkers and their effects on the dairy production of dual purpose cattle was evaluated through the collection and analysis of the primary information. The database maintained by the University of the Amazon, the National University of Colombia, and SCIELO, was analyzed using the keywords: animal welfare, ethology and bovine behavior. It was observed that the activities to which the cows are subjected in dairy production lead to an inevitable stress for the animal due to the conditions of the system, negatively affecting the production, specifically the quantity and quality of milk produced (Total solids, fats and proteins). Greater knowledge regarding animal welfare will contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of dual purpose cattle in dairy production, subject to different management conditions. In this sense, ethology becomes a powerful tool that helps to understand how these animals perceive their environment.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Trees in the production systems can effectively reduce hot weather-induced stress in the Brazilian Midwest. High temperatures cause changes in animals daily routine, and trees into pastures can promote benefits. The aim of this research was to evaluate the behavior of dairy heifers in silvopastoral systems in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. A herd of 24 crossbreed heifers (3/4 and 7/8 Holstein/Zebu), 350kg average weight, was evaluated over three seasons. Piatã grass was managed under three shade levels: full-sun, moderate-shade, and intensive-shade provided by 10 to 12m high Eucalyptus trees. Behavior data were collected every 15 minutes from 8:30h to 16h. Shade availability significantly impacted heifer behavior, mainly affecting grazing frequency and time during the hottest hours. Grazing behavior was affected by shade levels during the different seasons. Heifers showed preferred grazing times. Heifers in the intensive-shade system visited shady areas during the hottest hours throughout the seasons. Heifers in the full sun-system avoided grazing during the warmer times, ceasing feeding activities. Our results from the Brazilian Midwest showed that shade availability causes breed heifers to change their daily routine.

ABSTRACT

In modern pig farming, the search for systems that promote environmental quality and welfare is an important issue. In this sense, the present study evaluated the effects of environmental enrichment on the performance and behavior of piglets. In a completely randomized block design, 32 piglets (7.43kg mean weight), weaned at 28 days of age, were distributed into four treatments (control without enrichment, environmental enrichment with wood shavings as bedding; environmental enrichment with hanging toys and environmental enrichment with wood shavings + hanging toys). Four repetitions were performed for each treatment, with two animals per experimental unit. The instant scan sampling technique was used to record the behavior of each piglet for 20h. Animals receiving environmental enrichment with wood shavings + hanging toys were heavier at 70 days (P=0.02), exhibited higher total and daily weight gain (P=0.04 and P=0.02, respectively) and better feed conversion (P=0.02). Environmental enrichment increased the interaction of animals with the environment, allowing them to exhibit natural behaviors.

ABSTRACT

Clear definitions and standardized terminology in animal behavior studies have great significance in advancing research, avoiding misunderstandings in scientific communication, and helping the dissemination of subjects confined to academic studies to a broader audience. The behavior known as mobbing in English lacks a standard term to be used in animal behavior studies written in Portuguese. After examining mobbing's etymology and meanings, enumerating the main characteristics of this behavior in the many taxa where it occurs, suggesting some Portuguese words for translation and analyzing arguments in favor of and against their use, this article proposes the use of the word "assédio" to characterize mobbing behavior in studies written in Portuguese.

ABSTRACT

The state of the art of Ethology in five Latin America countries is briefly presented here. The overall outlook regarding research laboratories and themes is promising: the community is numerous, active and there are topics addressing all aspects of animal behavior, especially in large countries like Brazil and Argentina. Ethology as an undergraduate discipline is generally a sub-category of Biology, being taught mainly at Zoology/ Psychology/ Ecology/ Agriculture Courses and at Medical Veterinary Schools, often as an eligible discipline. Ethology as a formal major Graduate Program is rare and mainly restricted to Brazil. Regular Ethology meetings are held in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. In Chile and Venezuela there is a small but very active community. Studies of animal behavior are often carried out in other areas than Biology, and there is a clear overlap of interest regarding the major topics of Ethology. Behavioral ecology, conservation, management and animal welfare are a priority in most countries, probably reflecting a general concern regarding endangered species and habitats of the continent. Here we present information aiming to create a network that will increase collaborations among researchers working within the ethological framework in Latin America. The IV Simpósio de Etologia na América Latina, entitled "Desarrollo de la Etología en Latinoamérica:¿ hacia un futuro regional ?" was held in November, 2013, as part of the XXXI Encontro Anual de Etologia (EAE), in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. The state of art of Animal Behavior in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Venezuela were presented there and a set of six questions guided the presentations: 1).
